Liability Options
Joint and Several: With Joint and Several liability the Company and the individual Cardmember are responsible individually and together for all charges on the Corporate Card. In certain circumstances, a Company may be waived from liability for improper personal charges by the Cardmember. American Express will contact Cardmembers with past due balances to encourage payment.
Limited Liability: With Limited Liability the individual Cardmember alone is responsible for all charges on the Corporate Card. As a result, the credit criteria for issuing a Corporate Card is more stringent.
Liability for Central Billing Accounts: Where a company chooses to have charges centrally billed under a Central Billing Account, the Company will be solely liable for the charges on the account.

Spending Controls
As a general rule, the American Express Corporate Card features no pre-set spending limit. Some companies choose to set limits to help control high-risk spending on the Corporate Card and enforce spending policies. Various spend controls are available, including:
- Overall spending limits
- Retail spending limits
- Immediate suspension of charge privileges upon delinquency
- Reduced cash access limits for Cardmembers enrolled in the Corporate Express Cash program
